Secrets of Strixhaven: Mechanics, Dragons, First Details and Proxy Guide
A first look at Secrets of Strixhaven, highlighting the new Prepare mechanic, college identities, Paradigm value engines, and the return of the five founder dragons.

Secrets of Strixhaven: Mechanics, Dragons, and First Details
Secrets of Strixhaven has been officially revealed, bringing us back to Strixhaven with a stronger mechanical identity and a clearer gameplay direction.
This first look focuses on what matters most: how the set plays, what defines each college, and which mechanics will shape the format going forward.
Prepare: The Main New Mechanic
Cards with Prepare are primarily creatures that include a secondary spell embedded within them. When a creature becomes prepared, a copy of that spell is created in exile, and you may cast it later by paying its cost.

College Mechanics
Repartee (Silverquill): Triggers whenever you cast an instant or sorcery that targets a creature. These abilities resolve before the spell itself.
Opus (Prismari): Triggers whenever you cast an instant or sorcery and provides an additional effect if five or more mana was spent to cast it.
Infusion (Witherbloom): Checks whether you gained life during the turn. As long as life was gained at any point, the effect is enabled.

Paradigm: Long-Term Value Engine
The first time you cast a spell with Paradigm, it exiles itself. Every turn after, you may cast a copy of it for free.

The Five Founder Dragons
The legendary founder dragons return as central figures, reinforcing the mechanical direction of each college:
- Velomachus Lorehold: Recursion and combat.
- Galazeth Prismari: Explosive spell turns.
- Tanazir Quandrix: Scaling and growth.
- Shadrix Silverquill: Control and interaction.
- Beledros Witherbloom: Life as a resource.

First Impressions
Secrets of Strixhaven is built around timing, sequencing, and sustained value. The set moves away from immediate payoff and toward mechanics that reward planning across multiple turns.
